The Police Retirement System of St. Louis, Missouri

On January 5, 2024, President Joe Biden signed into law the Social Security Fairness Act.

This new law will have special significance for many First Responders and their spouses, as many First Responders’ jobs are not covered by Social Security.  For years, individuals whose First Responder jobs were not covered by Social Security but who held other employment that was covered by Social Security, had their Social Security benefits reduced by application of the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP).  Additionally, spouses of First Responders and other government workers often had their Social Security benefits reduced by application of the Government Pension Offset (GPO).

The Social Security Fairness Act repeals both the WEP and the GPO.
